The highlight of this year’s Old Masters auction “The Peasant Wedding” by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, is estimated at €1,000,000–1,200,000. The 42 x 59 cm panel is among the most outstanding compositions of the artist’s later phase. In this work, Brueghel picks up the peasant wedding motif established in an important composition painted by his father half a century earlier, which became a common subject for him after 1616.

However, the catalogue caters to every price range. So if you are looking for something a bit more humble, we suggest ‘A Naval Battle’ attributed to another Flemish master Cornelis de Wael, which is estimated to sell for €6.000€8.000. On sale from a private collection in Italy, this painting depicts a sea battle between Turks and Europeans, which was a popular theme in the early 17th century Dutch painting.
