Swiss auction house Koller is due to put an extensive collection of Asian Art on auction on June 6 and 7. The sale includes rare Buddha and Hindu gods’ statues, porcelain, arms, paintings, textile and so much more.
Below is a Buddha Shakyamuni statue posed in the “calling earth to witness” pose, which represents the Earth witnessing Buddha’s enlightenment. For more information on the meanings of Buddha poses, see our blog post here.
The catalogue includes an exquisite throne-like daybed, also called an opium bed, from China, Qing dynasty. Opium holds a great importance in 19th century China and this daybed bears witness to those times. This carved Hongmu day bed is richly inlaid with dreamstones, mother-of-pearl and brass wire.
